philosophy

Tourism is an important economic factor on the west coast of Sri Lanka. However, this development also brings negative side effects and great disadvantages to the region. Social problems and widespread illiteracy in socially deprived groups go hand in hand with the development of the infrastructure for tourism. Furthermore, the state school system in Sri Lanka is not currently in a position to motivate pupils to attend school regularly or to provide them with sufficient qualifications.

The one world foundation was founded in 1995 with the aim of promoting targeted and well-organised education projects in Sri Lanka. A free school education has been made possible for children and young people through the creation of free education units (preschool, English classes). The development and continuity of a high-quality school programme (well-trained teachers, individual curricula) is intended to increase the educational level in country areas as a supplement to the state school system.

The one world foundation sees itself as a communication centre for children and young people, who, through learning and playing together (sport, parties, drama, competitions) learn social responsibility. Communication between teachers and parents creates deeper understanding and the possibility to reflect on the problems, conflicts and needs of the population and to react to them.

Vocational training courses (tailoring and computer courses) increase graduates' job opportunities and train them how to set up their own businesses. A particular aim of the owf schools is to integrate girls and women into the education process and bring about a considerable improvement in their social status.

The one world foundation is a project based on fair exchange: capital and know-how acquired in privileged Europe is invested in the education of a less privileged society. At the same time however, this investment opens up experience of another culture, knowledge and the possibility for dialogue in a globalised world. one world is a symbol and code for this.
