Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde, Unterstützerinnen und Unterstützer,

fast zum zweiten Jahrestag des Tsunami vom 26. Dezember 2006, rund eineinhalb Jahre nach Baubeginn, wurde der neue one world foundation free education unit Schulcampus in Ahungalla am 9. Dezember 2006 feierlich eröffnet. Die Schulprovisorien haben damit ausgedient, alle Schulaktivitäten finden von nun an in der neuen Schule statt.

Wie im Vorjahr war der Monsunregen auch 2006 besonders stark und dauerte sogar bis in den Dezember hinein. Er erschwerte die Arbeiten am Schulareal bis zum Tag der Eröffnung, es wurde bis zum letzten Moment gearbeitet.

Hauptcampus Ahungalla

Am 5. Dezember fand das religiöse Eröffnungsfest in der neuen Schule statt. Etwa 15 Mönche sangen und beteten vom Abend bis in die frühen Morgenstunden, die örtliche Bevölkerung nahm an der traditionellen Zeremonie, die auch per Lautsprecher in den Ort übertragen wurde, teil.

Am Vormittag des 6. Dezember wurde die Schule gemäß buddhistischem Brauch nach dem Horoskop eingeweiht, der Zeitpunkt war schon vor Monaten bestimmt worden. Um 9 Uhr 11 wurde in einem Raum der Schule – mit Blick nach Norden – ein kleines Feuer entzündet, auf dem in einem Tontopf Milch zum Überkochen gebracht wurde, ein betender Mönch begleitete die Zeremonie.

Am 9. Dezember wurde der neue Schulcampus in Ahungalla bei herrlichem Wetter offiziell mit einem großen Schulfest eröffnet, neben Ansprachen gab es auf der neuen Bühne Darbietungen von Schülerinnen und Schülern der owf, die Schulklassen waren zu besichtigen, in der Women’s Cooperation fand eine Ausstellung mit den gefertigten Produkten statt. Viele Ehrengäste aus Europa und Sri Lanka, politische Entscheidungsträger, Förderer der owf und Persönlichkeiten aus Wirtschaft und Kultur wohnten der Eröffnung bei, wie der Bildungsminister Sri Lankas, Susil Premajayantha, die österreichische Botschafterin für Indien und Sri Lanka, Dr. Jutta Stefan-Bastl, Margitta und Wolfgang Weber für die Patronanz der Preschool Units, Prof. Patricia East und Prof. Erwin Seitz von der Fachhochschule München für die Patronanz der Computer Units, Gerda Themel von der Women’s Cooperation und Architekt Prof. Carl Pruscha.

Anlässlich der Schuleröffnung wurde eine Broschüre produziert. Sie können die Broschüre in englisch (ca. 3,7 mb) oder in singhalesisch (ca. 2,0 mb) runterladen.

Am 14. Dezember fand auch das traditionelle Schulschlussfest aller bisher bestehenden owf-Preschools aus Balapitya, Galwehera und Katuwila gemeinsam in der neuen Schule in Ahungalla statt. Die Preschool in Katuwila wird weiter bestehen, der Standort Galwehera sowie das Provisorium in Balapitya werden aufgelassen und in den neuen Schulcampus integriert.

Bis zum Beginn des neuen Schuljahres werden in der Ferienzeit über Weihnachten und Neujahr noch organisatorische und Detailarbeiten abgeschlossen. Der reguläre Schulbetrieb beginnt dann nach den Ferien am 8. Jänner 2007 mit einer kleinen Eröffnungsfeier.

Opening ceremony

Dear Friends and Supporters,

On 9 December 2006, almost on the second anniversary of the tsunami on 26 December 2006, around one and a half years after beginning construction, the new one world foundation free education unit school campus in Ahungalla was opened. The temporary school facilities have thereby served their purpose, from now on all school activities will take place in the new school.

Like last year the monsoon was also particularly heavy in 2006 and even lasted into December. It hampered work on the school campus until the day of the opening and work continued until the last moment.

Main campus in Ahungalla

On 5 December the religious opening ceremony took place at the new school. Around 15 monks sang and prayed from the evening until the early hours of the morning. The local population also participated in the traditional ceremony which was also transmitted to the locality via loudspeakers.

On the morning of 6 December, in accordance with Buddhist practice, the school was inaugurated according to the horoscope, the time had already been determined months previously. At 09.11 in one of the school rooms – looking out to the north – a small fire was lit on which a clay pot of milk was made to overboil while a praying monk accompanied the ceremony.

On 9 December, with marvellous weather, the new school campus in Ahungalla was officially opened with a large school celebration. Besides speeches there were performances by owf pupils on the new stage, the classrooms were open to be visited and on the Women's Cooperation premises there was an exhibition of their products. Many guests of honour from Europe and Sri Lanka, political decision-makers, owf supporters and personalities from business and culture were present at the opening, including Sri Lanka's minister of education Susil Premajayantha, the Austrian ambassador to India and Sri Lanka, Dr. Jutta Stefan-Bastl, Margitta and Wolfgang Weber for their patronage of the Preschool Unit, Prof. Patricia East and Prof. Erwin Seitz from the Fachhochschule Munich for their patronage of the Computer Unit, Gerda Themel from Women’s Cooperation and the architect Prof. Carl Pruscha.

On 14 December the traditional end of term celebration of all previous owf preschools in Balapitya, Galwehera and Katuwila took place together at the new school in Ahungalla. The preschool in Katuwila will continue in operation, while Galwehera and the temporary facilities in Balapitya have been closed down and integrated into the new school campus.

Until the beginning of the new school year in the holidays over Christmas and New Year organisational and detailed work will be concluded. Regular school operations then begin after the holidays on 8 January 2007 with a small opening celebration.
