Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde, Unterstützerinnen und Unterstützer,

nach der feierliche Eröffnung des neuen one world foundation free education unit Schulcampus in Ahungalla Anfang Dezember konnte mit Beginn des neuen Schuljahres der reguläre Schulbetrieb am 6. Jänner 2007 aufgenommen werden. Damit gehören alle Schulprovisorien endgültig der Vergangenheit an.

Im Rahmen eines Begrüßungs-Meetings zwischen Lehrern und Eltern wurden nach einer kleinen Zeremonie die neuen Schulgebäude vorgestellt. Der Andrang war sehr groß und es gab beinahe 900 Bewerbungen auf Ausbildungsplätze, wovon 500 berücksichtigt werden konnten – die übrigen wurden gelistet. Die one world foundation free education unit umfasst nun insgesamt

• 4 Vorschulklassen (nur vormittags)
• 4 Englisch-Klassen (ganztägig)
• 2 Primary-Klassen (nur nachmittags)
• 4 Computer-Klassen (ganztägig)
• 3 Schneider-Klassen der Women’s Cooperation (ganztägig) sowie ein Erwachsenenausbildungsprogramm für Mütter
• 1 Musikklasse (ganztägig)
• Sportunterricht (nur nachmittags).

In jeder Klasse sind maximal 24 Schüler, die Unterrichtszeiten sind vormittags von 8.30–11.30 Uhr, nachmittags von 14.30–17.30 Uhr.

Health-Camp

Weiters ist es der one world foundation dank großzügiger Unterstützung von Takeda-Pharma, Deutschland, gelungen, ein mobiles Health-Camp zu initiiern, welches von nun an monatlich in jeweils einem anderen Ort der näheren Umgebung Station machen wird und der Bevölkerung eine kostenlose medizinische Grundversorgung sicherstellt.

Dieses Service wurde ausgesprochen positiv angenommen, so konnten beim ersten Einsatz am Gelände der one world foundation free education unit am 11. Februar beinahe 500 Personen von insgesamt fünf Ärztinnen und Ärzten, unterstützt von qualifizierten Krankenschwestern und Pflegern, erstuntersucht (EKG, Blut- und Urintests etc.) und medizinisch entsprechend versorgt werden. An die Patienten wurden auch unentgeltlich Medikamente ausgegeben.

Weiters wurde Ende Jänner am Schulgelände ein von der Women´s Cooperation betriebener Kiosk eröffnet, wo es neben Tee und kleine Snacks auch Lehrmaterial und dergleichen zu kaufen gibt. Eine wesentliche Funktion erfüllt dieser Kiosk aber auch als kommunikatives Zentrum am Schulcampus, das von Lehrern, Schülern und auch Besuchern jederzeit gerne aufgesucht wird.

Das Sportangebot an der one world foundation free education unit wurde wesentlich erweitert. So konnte eine eigene Sportlehrerin engagiert werden und die Schüler können nun zwischen Kricket, Fußball, Volleyball und Badminton wählen. Es sollen eigene Schulteams gebildet werden, um künftig auch mit entsprechenden Teams anderer Schulen in Wettbewerb treten zu können.

Auch wir können vor dem in Sri Lanka schwelenden ethnischen Konflikt nicht die Augen verschließen, für den sich hoffentlich in absehbarer Zeit eine politische Lösung finden wird. Von diesen Spannungen blieb aber sowohl die Schuleröffnung unbehelligt, wie auch der reguläre Schulbetrieb völlig reibungslos abläuft. Selbstverständlich kann von unseren Besuchern auch ein Aufenthalt in der Bogenvillya ohne Beeinträchtigungen in Anspruch genommen werden.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

After the inauguration of the new one world foundation free education unit school campus in Ahungalla at the beginning of December regular school operations for the new school year could be started on 6 January 2007. All temporary schooling arrangements are thereby finally a thing of the past.

After a small ceremony during a welcome meeting of teachers and parents the new school buildings were presented. There were very many visitors and there were almost 900 applications for school places, of which 500 could be accepted – the others have been listed. The one world foundation free education unit now comprises of a total of:

• 4 preschool classes (only mornings)
• 4 English classes (whole day)
• 2 primary classes (only afternoons)
• 4 computer classes (whole day)
• 3 tailoring classes of Women’s Cooperation (whole day) and an adult education programme for mothers
• 1 music class (whole day)
• sport and physical education (only afternoons).

There is a maximum of 24 pupils in each class and school hours are mornings from 8.30–11.30 and afternoons from 14.30–17.30.

In addition, thanks to the generous support of Takeda-Pharma, Germany, the one world foundation has managed to set up a mobile health camp, which from now on will make a monthly stop in different location in the nearby area and provide the population with primary health care free of charge.

This service has been taken up extremely positively. At its first stop on the site of the one world foundation free education unit on 11 February almost 500 people could be examined by five doctors, supported by qualified nurses and auxiliary care staff (ECG, blood and urine tests etc.) and given appropriate medical care. The patients also received medicines free of charge.

In addition, a kiosk run by Women´s Cooperation was opened on the school site at the end of January where, besides tea and small snacks, exercise books and such like can be bought. However, this kiosk also fulfils an important function as a communicative centre on the school campus which is well frequented at all times by teachers, pupils and also visitors.

The sport provisions at the one world foundation free education unit have been considerably extended. We have been able to appoint a teacher just for sport and pupils can now choose between cricket, football, volleyball and badminton. The aim is to form school teams so as in future to be able to play against teams from other schools.

We also cannot close our eyes to the smouldering ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka, for which a political solution will hopefully be found in the foreseeable future. However, both the school opening was unaffected by this and regular school operations are running completely smoothly.

Naturally, our visitors can also stay at Bogenvillya without disturbance.
