Liebe Freundinnen und Freunde, Unterstützerinnen und Unterstützer,

der Schulbetrieb in der one world foundation – free education unit läuft nicht nur gut weiter, sondern wird auch weiter professionalisiert, dazu wurden neue Kooperationen mit offiziellen Stellen in Sri Lanka eingegangen. Die staatliche Kommission „Tertiary & Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) of Sri Lanka for Computer Courses“ (www.tvec.gov.lk) evaluiert ab sofort die Ergebnisse der Computer Unit. Die Curricula wurden an den staatlichen Lehrplan angeglichen, externe Prüfer/innen nehmen an der Schule die Abschlussprüfungen ab, die Prüfungen erfolgen nach dem international anerkannten Prüfungssystem „National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)“. Die Absolvent/inn/en erhalten somit ein international anerkanntes Zeugnis für ihren Berufsweg. Die Textilverarbeitungsausbildungen der Women's Cooperation sowie der Englisch Unit werden in Zukunft in Kooperation mit dem „National Apprentice Institute of Training Authority (NAITA) of Sri Lanka“ (www.naita.slt.lk) evaluiert. Diese neuen Kooperationen sollen die bereits hohe Qualität der Ausbildungsprogramme festigen und langfristig garantieren.

Vesak Fest

Auch das Trainingsprogramm mit internationalen Volontär/inn/en läuft gut, neben der Montessori-Lehrerin Pooja Pandit aus Bangalore, Indien, unterstützt nun auch die Praktikantin Julia Sklenak von der Fachhochschule München die Unterrichtsarbeit.

Anfang Mai wurde in Sri Lanka wieder das Vesak-Fest gefeiert, ein großes religiöses und kulturelles Fest zu Ehren von Buddhas Geburt, Erleuchtung und Tod. Straßen und Häuser werden mit farbenprächtigen Laternen geschmückt, so auch die owf-Schulen in Ahungalla und Katuvile. Schüler/innen, Lehrer/innen und Eltern bastelten zuvor in der Schule gemeinsam die Laternen.

Vesak Fest

In einer weiteren gemeinsamen Aktion sammelten Schüler/innen, Lehrer/innen und Eltern Kleider für die Flüchtlinge im Norden Sri Lankas. Nach den schrecklichen Ereignissen der letzten Wochen wurde der Konflikt nach einem Vierteljahrhundert offiziell für beendet erklärt. Die Menschen Sri Lankas blicken nun hoffnungsvoll in eine friedliche Zukunft in allen Landesteilen. Die one world foundation hofft, nach diesen schweren Zeiten auch wieder mehr Besucher/innen in ihren Einrichtungen begrüßen zu dürfen!

Joseph Ortner

Neben diesen hoffnungsvollen Nachrichten hat die one world foundation auch eine traurige Mitteilung zu machen. Der Direktor der one world foundation, Joseph Ortner, ist am 30. März 2009 völlig überraschend und unerwartet gestorben. Seine Leistungen und seine Aufbauarbeit bleiben unvergessen. Ich werde unsere gemeinsame Arbeit in seinem Sinne und mit positiver Kraft weiterführen,

Dear Friends and Supporters,

School operations at the one world foundation – free education unit are not only continuing to run well but have been made even more professional through new cooperation with official institutions in Sri Lanka. From now on the examinations of the Computer Unit will be evaluated by the Sri Lankan Tertiary & Vocational Education Commission (TVEC) (www.tvec.gov.lk). The curricula have been brought into line with the national curriculum and external examiners will now oversee the school's final exams, which are carried out in accordance with the internationally recognised National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) system. Students thereby receive an internationally recognised certificate for their careers. In future the Women's Cooperation textiles courses as well as the classes of the English Unit will be evaluated in cooperation with the National Apprentice Institute of Training Authority (NAITA) of Sri Lanka (www.naita.slt.lk). These new measures are intended to consolidate the already high quality of the training programmes and guarantee them in the long term.

Vesak celebrations

The training programme with international volunteers is also running well. In addition to the Montessori teacher Pooja Pandit from Bangalore, India, Julia Sklenak from the Fachhochschule Munich is now gaining work experience and supporting the teaching.

At the beginning of May the festival of Vesak was again celebrated in Sri Lanka. It is a big religious and cultural festival in celebration of Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death. Streets and houses are decorated with colourful lanterns, as were the owf schools in Ahungalla and Katuvile. Before the festival pupils, teachers and parents got together at the school to make lanterns.

In another joint initiative pupils, teachers and parents collected clothes for refugees in the north of Sri Lanka. After a quarter of a century the conflict has been officially declared to be ended following the terrible events of recent weeks. The people in Sri Lanka are hoping for and looking forward to a peaceful future in all parts of the country. The one world foundation also hopes to welcome still more visitors to its facilities following these hard times.

Joseph Ortner

After this news full of hope the one world foundation also has some sad news. The director of the one world foundation, Joseph Ortner, passed away on 30 March 2009 suddenly and unexpectedly. His achievements and his work in building up the school remain unforgotten. I will continue our joint work with positive energy as he would have wished.
